SHACK IS ALL SET UP!!

It was hard to think that only eight-hours before the Nichols and Clarke building on Shoreditch High Street had been a shell. When I arrived at 11am this morning, a wooden house had already been part constructed, the Shack was being fitted and various exhibitors including H&M were setting up for the two-day Futurising event.

In the Shack, 3D design graduates Owen Hodgkinson and Emma Payne were busy constricting a large dome. It looked quite a feat and considering the first time it was assembled for a Tate Takeover, they’d had a team of eight though the duo seemed fairly relaxed. Having graduated from Camberwell this year the pair’s next step is to find a shared studio and continue their work together. “Our next project is creating something for London Design Week in September. We’re thinking something mobile, perhaps incorporating bikes”, said Emma of her plans following completing her degree.

Over in the other corner of the Shack I bumped into Jotter’s Millie and Jane. For those not in the loop (which I wasn’t before 11 today), Jotter is a creative community run in collaboration with UAL. It functions on and off line as a community space for artists and designers that inspires and enables collaboration, an idea that they are putting into practice at Futurising through a series of workshops. Jotter online editor, Millie said, “We’ve found a fun way of getting our message across, we’re going to be running lot’s of games that promote collaboration like ‘we versus me’ and the collaborative wheel of fortune.” All sounded very fun when all this talk of wheels reminded Millie that she still needed to buy lots of flashing lights, off she ran to Leyland’s on the high street…

Leaving me with Jane, who also works for graphic design showcase, Emerge. Emerge provides facilities and opportunities for designers and is hosting a design competition during Futurising. The winner will be commissioned to design a poster for design  week that will be plastered up on London Underground. The winning design will be decided by Dominic Lippa from Pentagram. To enter just register at http://thisisemerge.com and send in your current work samples or go along and speak to Jane at the Emerge stall (A36), you can’t miss them, they have a bright green table cloth!. “Succesful entrants will be those who are conceptual but still commercially viable. Those who push their work to the boundaries of creativity,” said Jane, for those of you looking for the inside scoop!

Come down to the Shack to see it all live and meet all of the mentioned exhibitors. KNACK team will also be waiting there in the Shack for you.
